Listen: The lawyer fighting for India’s untouchables
The BBC has profiled lawyer Manjula Pradeep who was born in Western India to a Dalit family, a community on the lowest rung of the caste ladder.
Growing up she experienced severe discrimination and indignity because of her background. She was also the victim of sexual abuse yet excelled at school and managed to defy expectations to become a lawyer and high-profile activist.
She talks to Divya Arya about India’s millennia-old practice of open discrimination against the lower castes.
Now she’s helping Dalit rape victims get access to justice.
