Mason Hayes & Curran has published a legal review spotlighting updates to EU consumer protection and product safety law.

Now in its fourth year of publication, this edition of the law firm’s Products & Consumer Protection Review analyses key developments shaping the sector.

A central focus of this year’s mid-year review is the proposed revision of the EU Product Liability Directive. The changes aim to modernise liability rules to include software and related services.

For companies dealing with AI-enabled products, this expansion could increase potential liability exposure. The review delves into the implications of redefining ‘products’ to include these technologies.

The guide also explores emerging risks associated with AI chatbots and their potential for ‘hallucinations’. Additionally, it unpacks how the EU Data Act will affect connected devices and cloud services in Ireland.

Michaela Herron, head of products at Mason Hayes & Curran, said: “The first half of 2024 has brought notable changes and reforms impacting stakeholders in the consumer products sector. Our review offers detailed analysis and forward-looking perspectives on the regulatory changes shaping the market.”

James Gallagher, products partner, added: “The publication offers valuable insights for consumer product stakeholders. Our aim is to provide practical insights and equip businesses with the knowledge to effectively respond to these developments.”
