Michael D. Higgins to be presented with honorary law degree

The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, will today receive an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws at the University of Edinburgh.

President Higgins will receive the honorary degree at a graduation ceremony in the Scottish capital’s Usher Hall after participating in an academic seminar on aspects of Irish history.

Today is the second day of his four-day trip to Scotland.

Yesterday, he met Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and addressed Glasgow’s Irish community during a visit to the Govanhill Neighbourhood Centre.

The University of Edinburgh boasts of a world-class reputation in Irish history and was awarded funding by the Government in support of events exploring the history of the Easter Rising of 1916 as part of the Ireland 2016 Global Commemorations Programme.
