Michael Farrell to discuss EU and human rights at Dublin event
Distinguished human rights lawyer Michael Farrell will discuss the protection of human rights in Ireland by EU law at an event in Dublin tomorrow evening (25 February).
Mr Farrell, a member of the Irish Council of State and former senior solicitor with Free Legal Advice Clinics (FLAC), will speak at a free event organised by the Young Professionals’ Network.
It takes place at 6.30pm in The Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA).
His presentation will refer to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and its formal incorporation into Irish law in 2003, before moving onto a discussion about the relationship between EU human rights law and the Irish Courts.
As co-chair of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) in the 1990s, Mr Farrell pushed for the incorporation of the ECHR into domestic law.
He was a member of the Irish Human Rights Commission between 2001-11, after which he became the Irish member of the Council of Europe’s European Commission against Racism and Intolerance.
He continues to be a member of the human rights committee of the Law Society of Ireland.
