Military courts have dealt with 22 soldiers since 2016

Irish military courts have dealt with 22 members of the Defence Forces in the past four years, according to new figures.

Offences dealt with since 2016 include being drunk in charge of a military vehicle, assault causing harm, and fraud, The Irish Times reports.

In only one case, a private convicted of common assault was given a prison term, which was suspended for three months.

Of the 22 soldiers appearing before courts martial in the four-year period, 13 were charged with offences, of which 11 were convicted of at least one offence.

A further nine were appealing punishments imposed by their commanding officers, and all but one saw the charge either dismissed or the punishment reduced.
