Ministers expected to announce review of laws underpinning Special Criminal Court
Ministers are expected to announce a review of the legislation underpinning the prosecution of terrorism and organised crime offences in the non-jury Special Criminal Court.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee is today seeking approval from her Cabinet colleagues for the establishment of a committee to review the legislation, according to RTÉ News.
A review was one of the recommendations Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland (CFP) and a scoping exercise began last summer shortly after the laws were renewed.
Sections 2 to 4, 6 to 12, 14 and 17 of the Offences against the State (Amendment) Act 1998 and section 8 of the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009 were extended for another year within hours of their expiration due to the protracted negotiations to establish a government.
