Mr Justice Carroll Moran to chair Olympics inquiry
Mr Justice Carroll Moran will chair the non-statutory inquiry into the Olympics tickets controversy, the Government has announced.
The retired judge was named by Sports Minister Shane Ross and Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan yesterday following days of negotiations over the terms of reference.
In a statement, the ministers said: “We are pleased to announce that we have today appointed a former high court judge, Mr Justice Carroll Moran to investigate the circumstances surrounding the distribution of tickets for the Rio Olympics and related matters.
“The Terms of Reference are being circulated and the Judge is due to take up his position immediately.”
Mr Justice Moran was educated at University College Dublin (UCD) and became a solicitor in 1970 before being called to the Bar in 1975.
He became a judge of the Circuit Court in 1997 and served on the bench until 2014, when he was appointed to the High Court.
He retired from the High Court bench after a year.
Under the terms of reference for the inquiry, Mr Justice Moran will be asked to make a recommendation regarding the establishment of a statutory inquiry into the tickets controversy.
