Mr Justice Charleton: Disclosures Tribunal best placed to examine ‘smear’ allegations
The Disclosures Tribunal is the best placed to look into the alleged smear campaign against Garda Sgt Maurice McCabe, the tribunal judge has asserted.
Mr Justice Peter Charleton said the Oireachtas had decided a public inquiry “was the most appropriate way to investigate” matters.
The tribunal will hold sittings in early January into allegations surrounding conduct during the O’Higgins commission.
Mr Justice Charleton’s comments come as a scandal over the conduct of then-Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald threatens to bring down the Government by the end of the week.
