Mr Justice Colm Mac Eochaidh nominated for EU court role
Mr Justice Colm Mac Eochaidh has been nominated by Government for appointment as a judge of the General Court of the European Union.
New positions have been created by European Parliament and European Council decisions to progressively increase the number of judges in the General Court.
By 2019, each EU member state will have two judges in the General Court. Ireland is currently represented by Judge Anthony Collins.
The proposed appointment will expire on 31 August 2019, aligning the terms of office of both Irish judges on the General Court.
Before the appointment can be made, Mr Justice Mac Eochaidh will be assessed by a panel set up under Article 255 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union to confirm his suitability.
Mr Justice Mac Eochaidh studied law at UCD and at the King’s Inns.
He was an unsuccessful election candidate for Fine Gael in the 2002 election, when he stood in the Dublin South-East constituency.
