Mr Justice Hogan takes up role as ECJ Advocate-General
Mr Justice Gerard Hogan has formally taken up the position of Advocate-General of the European Court of Justice (ECJ).
Mr Justice Hogan, a former judge of the Court of Appeal, was nominated by the Government in May and was subsequently assessed by a panel established by the EU.
His appointment for a six-year term has now been published in the Official Journal of the European Union and took effect yesterday.
The ECJ comprises 28 judges and 11 advocates-general, who are appointed by the governments of the member states for renewable terms of six years.
Advocates-General present ‘opinions’, with which the court usually concurs.
Mr Justice Hogan was educated at University College Dublin (UCD) as well as the University of Pennsylvania and the Honorable Society of King’s Inns.
