Ms Justice Mary Irvine to retire later this year
Ms Justice Mary Irvine, the president of the High Court, will take early retirement later this year, according to reports.
The 65-year-old judge is said to have told colleagues of her decision at a private meeting in the Four Courts on Friday morning.
She is expected to retire at the end of July following the end of the next court term and it is so far unclear who will succeed her.
On her appointment in 2020, Ms Justice Irvine became the first woman to serve as president of the High Court and the first person in the history of the State to hold a fourth judicial office.
A graduate of University College Dublin and the King’s Inns, Ms Justice Irvine called to the Bar in 1978 and to the Inner Bar in 1996. Her judicial career began with her appointment as a High Court judge in 2007.
She was appointed to the Court of Appeal on its establishment in 2014 and to the Supreme Court in 2019, before being appointed as president of the High Court the subsequent year.
