Nearly €800 a day for Project Eagle lawyers
Lawyers for witnesses appearing before the commission of investigation into the sale of Nama’s Northern Ireland loans are being paid up to €788 per day, The Irish Times reports.
Retired High Court judge Mr Justice John Cooke was appointed earlier this year to investigate Project Eagle, the €1.6 billion sale of Nama’s Northern Ireland loans to US company Cerberus.
A preliminary report from the commission shows senior counsel representing clients will be paid €788.27 a day, junior counsel will be paid €394.14, and solicitors will be paid €624. The commission will also pay up to €780 towards the cost of affidavits by witnesses.
In certain circumstances, it will allow higher payments for affidavits where document discovery is involved.
The report also indicates Mr Justice Cooke will hear evidence in private, unless a witness wants to be heard in public or the commission is satisfied that it is in the public interest.
