New figures reveal 26 terminated pregnancies last year
There were 26 pregnancies terminated under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013 last year, according to new figures.
The second annual report on the Act has been laid before the Oireachtas, as required under section 20 of the Act.
It shows that 26 medical procedures were carried out under the Act, with 14 arising from a risk of physical illness, 3 arising from a risk from suicide and 9 from emergencies arising from physical illness.
The number is in line with the estimates given to TDs in January 2013, and is also the same as the number of terminations in 2014.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has also submitted a report as required under section 15 of the Act on Reviews carried out in 2015.
It shows that 1 application for review was made to the Executive and 1 review was carried out under section 9 of the Act.
The Review Committee found that this application did meet the criteria for a termination of pregnancy under the Act.
The number of applications and reviews carried out by the HSE in 2015 is also similar to the figure they submitted for 2014.
