New Supreme Court and High Court judges named
The government has nominated Mr Justice Maurice Collins for appointment to the Supreme Court and Judge Melanie Greally for appointment to the High Court.
Mr Justice Collins, a great-nephew of Michael Collins, will fill the Supreme Court vacancy arising from the retirement of Mr Justice Frank Clarke last October.
Educated at University College Cork and the King’s Inns, he was called to the Bar in 1989 and the Inner Bar in 2003. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2019.
Judge Greally will fill the High Court vacancy arising from the elevation of Ms Justice Nuala Butler to the Court of Appeal last month.
A graduate of University College Dublin and the King’s Inns, she entered the Bar in 1991. She was appointed to the Circuit Court in November 2014 and assigned to the Dublin Circuit the following July.
The government has taken the necessary steps to formally advise President Higgins of the nominations in accordance with constitutional practice.
