New video explains function of Office of Parliamentary Legal Advisers

Mellissa English SC

The Office of Parliamentary Legal Advisers (OPLA) in the Houses of the Oireachtas has published a short video providing an overview of its work.

Presented by Mellissa English SC, assistant secretary and chief parliamentary legal adviser, the video explains the role of the parliament’s lawyers, who are “completely independent of government”.

“We provide specialist non-partisan legal advice on a broad range of parliamentary, constitutional and corporate legal issues relevant to Parliament, its members and its staff,” Ms English says in the video.

She also explains the structure of the OPLA, which includes “specialist lawyers, each of whom are experienced and professionally qualified as a solicitor or barrister in the Irish State, together with legal researchers and support staff”.

It follows the publication last month of a short video where Cathy Egan BL explains the function of the OPLA’s private members’ bill legal advisory and drafting service for members.

The latest video can be found on the Oireachtas website.
