Next Garda commissioner to have power to hire staff
The next commissioner of An Garda Síochána will be allowed to hire their own staff, The Irish Times reports.
A document drawn up by the Department of Justice for Cabinet says that potential candidates to replace the former commissioner Nóirin O’Sullivan will likely require reassurance that they can appoint their own “team” around them.
The commissioner’s appointments would be hired on a contract basis, the Department’s advice document states.
The recruitment process for a new commissioner, with a starting salary between €200,000–€250,000, is unlikely to conclude until autumn.
Ms O’Sullivan unexpectedly announced her retirement in September 2017, just short of three years after taking on the role.
