NI: NI human rights commissioner meets with European counterpart
Northern Ireland’s human rights commissioner discussed legacy issues and plans to scrap the UK’s Human Rights Act 1998 at a meeting in Belfast yesterday.
Chief Commissioner Les Allamby of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) spoke with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muižnieks, about the critical human rights issues facing Northern Ireland and the UK.
Other subjects discussed included the human rights of migrants, in particular refugees, as well as counter-terrorism and surveillance measures.
Mr Muižnieks visited Belfast as part of his wider visit to the United Kingdom between 17-23 January 2016.
His visit focusses on issues relating to the UK’s role and relationship with the European human rights protection system.
