NI Law Society: Attempted murder of PSNI officer an attack on democracy and the rule of law
The Law Society of Northern Ireland has condemned the attempted murder of a senior PSNI officer as an “attack on democracy and the rule of law”.
John Caldwell, a detective chief inspector in the PSNI’s major investigation team, is in hospital in a “critical but stable” condition after being shot a number of times in Omagh on Wednesday night.
Police have arrested three men aged 38, 45 and 47 under the Terrorism Act in Omagh and Coalisland in connection with the attempted murder, who are currently being questioned by detectives in Musgrave Serious Crime Suite.
In a statement today, Brian Archer, president of the Law Society of Northern Ireland, said: “As we approach the anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement it is reprehensible that there are still people in our midst who would attempt to kill a police officer and drag us back to our troubled past.
“The attack on John Caldwell, when he was giving of his time to help our young people, is an attack on all of us and must be called out for what it is — an attack on democracy and the rule of law.
“The Law Society of Northern Ireland, and the solicitor profession we represent, hold John Caldwell and his family in our thoughts and prayers at this time.”
