‘No tunnel or walkway’ between Limerick prison and new courthouse
Prisoners will be transported from Limerick Prison to the new Limerick Courthouse by prison van rather than the tunnel or walkway once anticipated, the Limerick Leader reports.
Sittings at the new courthouse are expected to begin tomorrow, just days after the new €20 million Letterkenny Courthouse was opened.
A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service confirmed that there is “no tunnel or walkway between the Prison and the courthouse”, meaning that remand prisoners will be transported the 200-yard distance between the buildings by use of prison vans.
The new courthouse on Mulgrave Street includes six courtrooms, a custody suite and various offices.
Ireland’s Supreme Court will sit in the new courthouse complex for three days in March under plans revealed last month.
