NUJ seeks meeting with GSOC over access of journalists’ records
The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has sought a meeting with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) following reports that it accessed journalists’ mobile phone records during an inquiry into internal media leaks.
GSOC has refused to comment on reports that new powers were used to access the phone records of two journalists during an inquiry into information leaked about the death of Katy French.
Séamus Dooley, Irish secretary of the NUJ, told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that he will seek a meeting with GSOC over the issue.
Mr Dooley said on the programme: “This is not a question of GSOC trawling through a few phone numbers. Your mobile phone is like a mini computer and it stores meta-data.
“The notion that without any access to a court that GSOC can go in and secretly, without the knowledge of the journalist, and get this is information is very worrying.”
