Obituary recalls wartime heroism of Northern Ireland judge Robin Rowland
The Times has published an obituary of Judge Robin Rowland which recalls his military service in World War II as part of the British Empire’s “Forgotten Army”.
Judge Rowland was born in Co Antrim in 1922 and began studying law at Queen’s University Belfast in 1940, where he also joined the British Army’s officer training corps.
He became a commissioned officer in 1942 and was posted to the Royal Deccan Horse of the British Indian Army, and later to the Punjab Regiment.
On his return to the UK in September 1946, Judge Rowland resumed his legal studies and called to the Northern Ireland bar in 1949, becoming a QC in 1969. He was appointed as a County Court judge in 1974 and as president of the Lands Tribunal in 1983.
