One day left for Liberty crowdfunder against UK government over Snooper’s Charter

There is just one day left to contribute to Liberty’s legal fees in its fight against the UK government over the Snoopers’ Charter.

The Investigatory Powers Act – or Snoopers’ Charter – lets the government monitor records of everyone’s texts, emails and calls. It means everybody’s web browsing history and location tracking data is now stored on an industrial scale.

Liberty said: “Vast digital dossiers of your private information are now being collected with no need for suspicion of crime.

“Spying on everyone like this undermines everything that’s core to our freedom and democracy. Our privacy. Our free speech and protest rights. Our free press and fair process. Doctor-patient confidentiality, legal privilege and protections for journalists’ sources and whistle-blowers.”

In the first round of Liberty’s legal case, the High Court ruled that the government must urgently change key parts of the Investigatory Powers Act.

Public bodies will no longer be able to access people’s personal data without independent authorisation or, when seeking to fight crime, without suspicion of a serious crime.

The next round of Liberty’s legal challenge will contest the government’s power to hack into computers, phones and tablets and create ‘personal data sets’ – databases containing detailed records on every one of us.

Liberty will argue that the government can’t simply ignore our fundamental rights when it comes to surveillance, and has to fully justify the scope of the powers it claims it needs.
