Over 400 same-sex couples married since equality referendum
More than 400 same-sex couples have been married in Ireland since the marriage referendum, which took place one year ago.
Figures released by the Department of Social Protection show there have been 412 same-sex marriages since the Marriage Act 2015 was signed into law in November.
A majority (52 per cent) of marriages took place in Dublin, while 10 per cent were in Cork, 6 per cent in Limerick and 4 per cent in Wicklow.
Co Clare is the only county in Ireland where no same-sex marriages have yet been registered.
Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar said: “The Marriage Equality Referendum was a historic day for Ireland. One year on, it’s really great to see that 412 marriages have now taken place which otherwise would not have happened. It’s a timely reminder of that momentous vote on that momentous day.”
