NI: Over 700 women travelled to England for abortions in 2016
New figures have revealed more than 700 women from Northern Ireland travelled to England for an abortion last year.
According to the Department of Health in England and Wales, 742 women from Northern Ireland travelled to England for an abortion in 2016, down from 833 in 2015.
A majority (57 per cent) were either teenagers or in their twenties.
There were also more than 3,000 women from south of the Irish border who travelled to England for an abortion in 2016.
Grainne Teggart, Amnesty’s Northern Ireland campaigns manager, told BBC News the figure could be higher because of “women who give the address of family or friends in England”.
