Pat Hickey trial to begin in Brazil in late November
The trial in Brazil of Pat Hickey, former president of the Olympic Council of Ireland, on charges of theft, tax evasion, money-laundering and criminal association will begin in November.
Mr Hickey’s trial in Rio de Janeiro will begin on 29 November, almost a year after he left Brazil on medical grounds, The Irish Times reports.
Prosecutors said last week that Mr Hickey’s €400,000 bail bond would be retained if he did not return to Ireland for the start of the trial.
However, Mr Hickey’s lawyers have said they will seek permission for their client to give evidence via video link from Ireland.
Legal advice from Arthur Lavigne Associates argues that Mr Hickey does not need to be in Brazil for proceedings, though prosecutors have said he agreed to return when signing the bail agreement.
