Penal reform group contributes to EU pre-trial detention project
The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) has published a report on Ireland for a new European pre-trial detention project coordinated by Fair Trials International.
The project, which has funding from the European Commission, is titled The Practice of Pre-Trial Detention: Monitoring Alternatives and Judicial Decision-Making.
A report published on the IPRT website looks at pre-trial detention in Ireland as well as forthcoming legislation like the Bail Bill 2015.
Partners from nine other EU countries - Romania, Lithuania, the Netherlands, the UK, Spain, Greece, Poland, Hungary, and Italy - have also submitted similar reports for the project.
Fair Trials International said the reports provide an opportunity to examine local and regional use of pre-trial detention, judicial decision-making, and the use of alternatives.
