Penal reform group to launch report on older prisoners

The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT) will launch a report on the rights of older people in prison at an event in Dublin next week.

The Rights, Needs and Experiences of Older People in Prison in Ireland will be launched in the Ashling Hotel on Friday 30 September, the eve of the UN International Day of Older Persons.

This report is based on research commissioned by IPRT and conducted by Joanna Joyce and Dr Tina Maschi.

Attendees will hear from Joanna Joyce, co-author of the report; Justin Moran, head of advocacy and communications at Age Action Ireland; and Patrick Gageby SC.

According to the Irish Prison Service, almost 10 per cent of people in prison custody in 2015 were over the age of 50.

The IPRT says older people in prison are particularly vulnerable and face a wide range of issues which are different from those faced by the general prison population.

The report examines these issues across six main themes:

  • physical and mental health needs
  • mobility and the physical environment
  • social care needs
  • bullying and victimisation
  • participation in prison programmes
  • release planning and resettlement
