Solicitor and former Belfast City Council chief executive Peter McNaney has been appointed as a non-executive member to the board of Belfast Harbour Commissioners.

Mr McNaney practised as a corporate lawyer for 20 years prior to serving as chief executive of Belfast City Council for 13 years.

He is an experienced non-executive director, with terms serving on the board or council of Invest NI, Northern Ireland Water, Belfast Metropolitan College and the University of Ulster.

He is one of six new appointments to the board of Belfast Harbour Commissioners alongside Eamonn O’Reilly, Rachael Ferguson, Sharon O’Connor, Mel Chittock and Michael Wardlow.

Three others — Noel Lavery, Gerard McGinn and Malcolm McKibbin — have been reappointed to serve second terms.

Eight of the appointments took effect from 1 April, whil Ms Ferguson’s appointment will be from 1 June 2025. All will be for a maximum of four years.

The commissioners have responsibility, under a series of Harbour Acts and Orders, for developing, maintaining, and operating Belfast Port to the highest standards of efficiency, financial prudence, environmental awareness, safety, and security to the benefit of all stakeholders.

Northern Ireland infrastructure minister Liz Kimmins said: “I am pleased to announce these important appointments.

“I am confident that all appointees will use their combined significant skills and experience to aid the executive team and enhance the board in the task of operating, maintaining and improving the harbour in the years ahead.”
