Peter Thornton QC to lead Birmingham bombing inquests
Peter Thornton QC, one of Britain’s most senior coroners, will lead the re-opened inquests into the Birmingham pub bombings.
The double bombing on 21 November 1974 led to 21 fatalities and injured a further 182 people.
Mr Thornton was chosen by the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, after consultation with Lord Chancellor Liz Truss.
Louise Hunt, the senior coroner for Birmingham and Solihull, ruled in June that the inquests should be reopened due to “a wealth of evidence that still has not been heard”.
A pre-inquest hearing is due to take place on 28 November.
