NI: In pictures: Law School faculty on strike at QUB and UU
Lecturers, PhD students and staff at Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University have gone on strike in a dispute over pensions.
A total of 64 universities across the UK are taking part in the four-week strike. The University and College Union (UCU) has around 600 members at UU and over 900 at QUB, BBC News reports.
The photo above was taken by Anna Bryson, senior lecturer at QUB School of Law.
Strike action is taking place this Thursday and Friday, then next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and further action is planned for the first two weeks of March.
The dispute centres on plans to end the defined benefit element of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) pension scheme, which UCU says would leave lecturers almost £10,000 a year worse off.
QUB Students’ Union (QUBSU) and Ulster University Students’ Union (UUSU) have also given their full support to the strike.
