Polish minister accuses Irish judge of ‘political games’
A Polish justice minister has accused the Irish judiciary of engaging in “political games” in a continuing row over the extradition of a wanted Polish national, The Irish Times reports.
Marcin Warchoł, under-secretary of state in the Ministry of Justice, said: “I am surprised the court adopted the position of a political body. The court shouldn’t engage in political games.”
Ms Justice Aileen Donnelly recently ruled in the High Court that a case in which a man facing extradition to Poland objected on the basis that Polish judicial reforms had undermined the rule of law should be referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
Mr Warchoł said the Irish courts were “delaying this punishment completely on biased arguments”, and claimed it is beyond the jurisdiction of the CJEU to “decide whether or not reforms in this country are consistent with the rule of law or not”.
He also distanced himself from right-wing Polish media attacks on Ms Justice Donnelly, many of which highlighted the judge’s sexuality.
Mr Warchoł said: “I don’t see any connection. Sexual orientation doesn’t matter in this case.”
