Politicians hear of International Protection Act failures
The implementation of the International Protection Act has created chaos for asylum seekers, campaigners told members of the Oireachtas at a presentation last night.
Dublin solicitor Wendy Lyon, who specialises in immigration and refugee law, was among those who addressed the meeting hosted by the Movement of Asylum Seekers Ireland (MASI).
Ms Lyon told assembled politicians - who were largely Independents or belonging to small parties - that there continue to be “real problems in ensuring asylum seekers are adequately represented”.
She criticised the “severe under-resourcing” of legal aid for applicants and low fees for private practitioners.
Ms Lyon also criticised the lack of legal aid for people who are turned away at Ireland’s borders despite wanting to claim asylum.
The meeting also heard from MASI’s Lucky Khambule, the Anti-Racism Network (ARN), and playwright Donal O’Kelly.
Around 30 asylum seekers attended in order to give politicians the opportunity to meet people affected by the legal changes.
Last month, Ms Lyon called on the Department of Justice to “take responsibility” for panic among asylum applicants over the supposed 20-day deadline for returning new asylum application forms.
Speaking today to ILN, she said the new application process continues to pose difficulties for asylum seekers and practitioners.
