NI: Portrait of John P.B. Maxwell unveiled in Inn of Court
A new portrait of barrister John P.B. Maxwell has been unveiled in the Inn of Court in tribute of his exceptional contribution to life at the Bar.
The portrait was commissioned by the Bar Council of Northern Ireland and painted by artist Carol Graham, who joined senior legal figures at its unveiling.
Mr Maxwell was called to the Bar in 1971, serving as secretary to the Bar Council and as the Bar’s representative on the Magistrates’ Court Rules Committee for a number of years alongside developing a practice focused on criminal work.
He went on to establish the JPB Maxwell Scholarship awards in 2008, which recognise young barristers who distinguish themselves in the course of their postgraduate training at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies (IPLS) and to date 48 scholarships have been awarded.
An array of esteemed guests including representatives from the judiciary, Bar Council, the IPLS, former JPB Maxwell scholars and members joined Carol Graham at the portrait unveiling.
Sarah Ramsey QC, chair of the Bar Council, said: “The life and career of JPB Maxwell embody the finest collegiate spirit of the Bar Library.
“This new portrait is a fitting tribute as John has been a fundamental part of the Bar now for almost 50 years and has played a vital role in helping many new members find their place within the legal profession through his scholarship scheme and its exceptionally generous financial support.”
