NI: PPS to re-examine decision not to prosecute soldier who shot man
The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) is set to re-examine a decision not to prosecute a soldier who fatally shot 23-year-old Aidan McAnespie at a border checkpoint in 1988.
Mr McAnespie was killed after walking through an army checkpoint in County Tyrone on 21 February 1988.
Manslaughter charges against the soldier involved were dropped in 1990.
He was subsequently fined for negligent discharge of his weapon and allowed to return to duty, before receiving a medical discharge less than a year later.
Attorney General for Northern Ireland John Larkin referred the case to the Director of Public Prosecutions Barra McGrory after being asked to consider a request from the McAnespie family for a new inquest.
Solicitor Darragh Mackin of Belfast firm KRW Law told The Irish News that the family remains convinced Mr McAnespie was “unlawfully and deliberately killed”.
He said the family “will be engaging with the PPS in the coming weeks”.
