Prison inspector completes inquiry into covert surveillance allegations
The Inspector of Prisons, Patricia Gilheaney, has completed a preliminary inquiry into allegations of covert surveillance in Irish prisons.
Ms Gilheaney was asked by Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan last November to examine allegations that private conversations between solicitors and prisoners were covertly monitored by gardaí.
The allegations were included in a sworn affidavit from a serving prison officer and were first reported in the Irish Examiner.
Ms Gilheaney has now completed her work and has presented a report to Mr Flanagan, who is now considering it in consultation with the Attorney General, The Irish Times reports.
Mr Flanagan will decide whether or not the report is published.
