Prison service to double its spend on electronic tagging
The Irish Prison Service (IPS) is planning to spend €680,000 on the electronic tagging of Irish prisoners in the next two years, The Times reports.
The service is currently advertising a two-year tender for a private company to provide the location of up to 50 prisoners at a time.
It marks an increase in the total €166,117 spend on the tagging and monitoring of 59 prisoners in 2017, the latest year with available figures.
The two-year contract will be awarded to the “most economically advantageous tender”, with the option of a two-year extension.
