Private reprimands for judges was product of lobbying

Controversial proposals to protect the names of judges who have been reprimanded for misconduct were introduced on the lobbying of the judiciary, The Irish Times reports.
The provisions were reportedly introduced to the Judicial Council Bill 2017 after former Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Susan Denham, contacted former Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald in 2015.
Mrs Justice Denham is said to have pointed out a previous draft bill from 2009 specified disciplinary proceedings should be held in private.
The proposals have come under criticism from opposition politicians, the Law Society of Ireland, and some senior judges.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice told The Irish Times: “The 2017 Bill is broadly based on the General Scheme published in 2010 but as is normal the published Bill has been developed in the course of the drafting process.”
