Pro-choice lawyers get organised ahead of Eighth Amendment referendum
Lawyers who support abortion law reform are meeting tonight to get organised in anticipation of a referendum on the Eighth Amendment.
Lawyers for Choice, part of the Coalition to Repeal the Eighth Amendment, aims to unite those from the Irish legal community, in Ireland and abroad, who support free, safe and legal access to abortion.
The group, which has existed largely as a small, ad hoc group to date, is looking to expand its role by agreeing a mission statement and planning new projects and activities with a legal theme.
Máiréad Enright, senior lecturer at Birmingham Law School, is facilitating tonight’s meeting alongside Sandra Duffy from University College Cork and Vicky Conway from Dublin City University.
Speaking to Irish Legal News, Ms Enright said: “We hope Lawyers for Choice will be able to contribute to the movement for abortion law reform in Ireland both by supporting pro-choice activism and by contributing to public understanding of the relationships between law and reproductive justice.”
The meeting takes place from 7pm-9pm tonight in the Teachers’ Club, Parnell Square, Dublin.
