Process for picking next Chief Justice to be agreed tomorrow
The process for selecting Mr Justice Frank Clarke’s successor as Chief Justice of Ireland is set to be agreed by ministers tomorrow.
Mr Justice Clarke, who has held the top judicial post since 2017, is set to retire later this year. He will turn 70 in October.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee will seek approval for the establishment of a bespoke selection committee involving Attorney General Paul Gallagher SC, a leading judge and a lay person, according to the Irish Examiner.
This will reflect the same process used to appoint Mr Justice Clarke in 2017. Neither the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board (JAAB) process nor the proposed new judicial appointments process will be used.
