Professor Marie Cassidy to retire as state pathologist
Tributes have been paid to Professor Marie Cassidy on her imminent retirement as state pathologist after more than fourteen years.
Professor Cassidy was appointed deputy state pathologist in January 1998 and succeeded Dr John Harbison as state pathologist six years later.
Prior to her appointment to the Office of the State Pathologist, she was professor of forensic medicine at the University of Glasgow in her native Scotland, having become the UK’s first female full-time forensic pathologist in 1985.
Paying tribute, Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said the Office of the State Pathologist is “a vital part of the criminal justice system”.
He added: “I would like to thank Marie for her valuable service to the Irish people.
“I know that she will be greatly missed not just by her colleagues in the Office of the State Pathologist, but by all those who work with her in the criminal justice system. I wish Marie a long and happy retirement.”
Mr Flanagan also thanked the deputy state pathologists, Dr Michael Curtis and Dr Linda Mulligan, and the assistant state pathologist Dr Margo Bolster for their ongoing work.
