Professor Roja Fazaeli named deputy chair of Front Line Defenders
The University of Galway’s Professor Roja Fazaeli has been appointed as deputy chairperson of international human rights organisation Front Line Defenders.
Professor Fazaeli was appointed last summer as established professor of law and Islamic studies at the Irish Centre for Human Rights in University of Galway School of Law.
She was previously professor of Islamic civilisations at Trinity College Dublin, where she gained her BA and MPhil. She holds a PhD in international human rights law from the University of Galway.
Professor Fazaeli has published widely on the subjects of women’s rights in Iran, the relationship between human rights and religion, women religious authorities, and Islamic feminisms.
As well as serving as deputy chairperson of the Front Line Defenders board, she serves as the chairperson of the board of directors of the Immigrant Council of Ireland and is a member of the board of directors for Scholars at Risk Europe and Iran Academia.
Front Line Defenders is an international human rights organisation founded in Dublin in 2001, with the specific aim of protecting human rights defenders at risk.
