Professor Siobhán Mullally re-elected to European anti-trafficking committee

Professor Siobhán Mullally has been re-elected to the Council of Europe’s Group of Experts on Action Against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) for a second two-year term.

Professor Mullally is currently Professor of Law (Chair) at University College Cork and has published extensively in the field of migration, gender and human rights law.

She told Irish Legal News: “I’m delighted to be re-elected to the Council of Europe anti-trafficking monitoring body, GRETA, having served for the last four years as a member and 1st Vice President.

“Over the last year, our work has focused in particular on the identification and protection of possible victims of trafficking in the context of the refugee crisis in Europe, with monitoring visits to Calais and an urgent country visit to Italy, including to hotspots in Sicily.

“The gaps in protection for refugee and migrant children, vulnerable to exploitation by trafficking networks, remains a serious concern for us, and will continue to be a focus of our work over the next two years.”

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said: “Professor Siobhán Mullally will continue to make a significant contribution to the important work of GRETA given her wide range of expertise and experience in the area of human trafficking at national and international level.”
