NI: PSNI Chief Constable warns of ‘lack of clarity’ about post-Brexit arrangements
The PSNI Chief Constable has warned there is a lack of clarity about post-Brexit policing and justice arrangements, the Irish Independent reports.
Chief Constable George Hamilton addressed the House of Lords EU committee during its visit to Belfast to examine the impact of Brexit.
Mr Hamilton said that the “biggest practical vulnerability” is the removal of the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) and the need to find an alternative arrangement for cross-border policing.
He said: “We have been treading carefully to not move into the political debate, but we also feel a certain concern and lack of assurance that we’re saying the same things now that we were 18 months ago.
“We stand ready as public servants, in an apolitical sense, to advise, to help, support, but we’re not seeing, on the policing and criminal justice front, enough direction, clarity, and asking about what we need.”
