NI: PSNI face questions after suspect escapes from courthouse parking lot
A man who was due to appear in Londonderry Court House on robbery charges yesterday escaped after scaling two security fences in a secure parking area outside the building, the Belfast Telegraph reports.
Dean Beattie, 22, was not handcuffed while being transported to the courthouse by PSNI officers.
After he exited the vehicle, he immediately climbed a six-foot internal security fence and then a second 10-foot fence.
The entire incident was reportedly recorded on CCTV security cameras belonging to the courthouse.
Officers failed to re-apprehend Mr Beattie and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
PSNI officers are facing questions over courthouse and prisoner transport security in the wake of the unexpected escape.
Gregory Campbell, MP for East Londonderry, told the Belfast Telegraph: “There must be an urgent review of the way prisoners are transported from police stations to courthouses, specifically in this instance to Bishop Street Court House.”
