Reservists call for employment protections during overseas deployment

Legislation allowing Irish military reservists to serve overseas should also protect them from being sacked while deployed, the Reserve Defence Force Representative Association (RDFRA) has said.

The Defence (Amendment) Bill 2020, which cleared the Dáil in June and will soon be considered by the Seanad, will allow for reservists to be deployed abroad.

The RDFRA, which represents reservists, welcomed the “hugely significant development”, but said reservists should gain employment law protections comparable to in other countries.

A spokesperson for the RDFRA told the Irish Examiner that most countries which allow reservists to be sent overseas have protections for their full-time jobs during their deployment.

Similar protections were introduced in Ireland during World War II and on a temporary basis during the Covid-19 crisis, they added.
