Ryanair loses defamation action against pilots
Irish-based airline Ryanair has lost its defamation action in the High Court against three pilots belonging to the Ryanair Pilot Group (RPG).
Evert Van Zwol, John Goss and Ted Murphy were sued over an email sent by the RPG on 12 September 2013, headlined “Pilot update, what the markets are saying about Ryanair”.
The airline said the email falsely implied that its management had misled the market and facilitated insider dealing, among other things.
By a majority, the 11-person jury found the email had wrongly implied Ryanair engaged in market manipulation, but the defendants had not acted with malice and the email did not imply other wrongdoings.
Mr Justice Bernard Barton awarded costs to the defendants.
