Savita Halappanavar case ends with undisclosed settlement and €35k award
The High Court in Dublin yesterday heard that the Health Service Executive (HSE) has reached a settlement in a case brought over the death of Savita Halappanavar.
Praveen Halappanavar brought the medical negligence suit against University Hospital Galway staff and management over Ms Halappanavar’s controversial death in 2012.
The case was due to begin yesterday but was struck out instead.
Mr Justice Kevin Cross, sitting on the bench, heard that HSE had admitted Ms Halappanavar’s death was wrongful. The settlement with Mr Halappanavar is thought to be substantial.
An additional statutory award of €35,000 for mental distress, payable under the terms of the Civil Liability Act 1961, will be divided between her parents, her husband and her two brothers.
Ms Halappanavar’s father, Andanappa Yalagi, has maintained his demand for an apology from the Government in light of the settlement.
