Scoping exercise under way for review of laws underpinning Special Criminal Court

Officials have begun a scoping exercise ahead of a review of legislation underpinning the prosecution of terrorism and organised crime offences in the non-jury Special Criminal Court.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee yesterday told Senators that she is “fully committed to this review”, which was one of the recommendations of the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland (CFP).
The Seanad yesterday agreed to extend the operation of sections 2 to 4, 6 to 12, 14 and 17 of the Offences against the State (Amendment) Act 1998 and section 8 of the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009 for another year.
The provisions were renewed just hours before they expired because the Seanad could not sit until the new government took up office over the weekend. Labour Senator Ivana Bacik noted that Senators “have never debated the renewal motion so close to the deadline”.
Ms McEntee said: “The renewal of these provisions sends a very clear message to those who wish to threaten or to intimidate that this State will not tolerate those wedded to violence or those who oppose peace, democracy and the rule of law.”
