Senators back repeal of Good Friday alcohol ban
Ireland’s 90-year-old ban on the sale of alcohol on Good Friday is approaching its end after Senators gave their approval to the Intoxicating Liquor (Amendment) Bill.
The bill, proposed by Independent Senator Billy Lawless, will now be debated in the Dáil.
Senator Lawless said the bill was “another progressive step in Ireland’s long journey of separation between Church and State”.
Padraig Cribben, CEO of the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI), said the vote had put a nail in the coffin of the “archaic law” governing alcohol sales on Good Friday.
He added: “We are asking the Government to expedite the Bill’s passage through the Dail and enact legislation that is long overdue.”
