Shane Ross says Woulfe has strengthened case for lay chair on judicial appointments body
The controversy over Mr Justice Séamus Woulfe’s attendance at an Oireachtas Golf Society dinner strengthens the case for a lay chairperson on the proposed Judicial Appointments Commission, former minister Shane Ross has said.
Mr Ross, the maverick Independent Alliance minister who pushed hard for judicial appointments reform until losing his seat this year, told the Legally Fond podcast that the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill should be expedited in light of the saga.
The new government has committed to introducing the new body, but with the Chief Justice as its chairperson.
Speaking on the podcast, Mr Ross said it would be “very foolish” for the government to put the Chief Justice in this role “in light of the examination the Séamus Woulfe has brought on the judiciary themselves”.
The interview forms part of the second series of Legally Fond, the award-winning podcast presented by TCD law students Gavin Dowd, Alex MacDonnell and Pierce O’Meara.
